In a major U-turn, the Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) government in Gujarat last evening announced withdrawal of its earlier decision to provide 10% reservation to economically weaker sections among upper castes. The state government had brought in Gujarat Unreserved Economically Weaker Sections (Reservation of Seats in Educational Institutions in the State and of Appointments and Posts in Services under the State) Ordinance, 2016, in its bid to defuse the Patel quota stir in the state.
